OR A
We used to laugh when Mom would call our 90-pound canine buddy, Paco, a cow or a seal.
She really seemed to have lost a grip on reality when she couldn’t identify a dog, so we thought.
Some time later, I recalled those moments and realized Mom had a good idea of what she was saying.
* In the case of the “cow” – Paco is very large and black and white in color … so is a Holstein.
* Regarding the “seal” – when Paco is playing with much gusto he makes a noise like the throaty voice of a seal.
A friend’s mom may have had a purpose for placing the yogurt in her lingerie drawer.
* Maybe she didn’t want anyone else to eat it.
* Maybe she gets hungry at night and wants food nearby.
She may well have had a purpose for her action, though she lost an important detail – Yogurt must stay refrigerated.
As we look back at some of the events we found strange yet humorous, the joke was actually on us!
Thank you for the story of your Mom and the various names of animals that she used to describe Paco.
You mention in your description of “All Things Dementia” that the person with dementia is also experiencing what is happening to him/her. So good for all of us to remember that important fact. Dementia is their subjective reality, not just an objective reality to those of us looking on.
