For weeks, after sundown my mom would gather her shoes and place them in the car.
Her reason – she was going home.
I feel this was another one of those times when Mom didn’t recognize “home as home,” so she wanted to go back to the familiar.
Never argue in these situations, for it will only escalate the anxiety already present.
As long as your loved one isn’t in any danger, let her continue with the packing. It may be reassuring to her if you offer to help carry the shoes or whatever she is packing. Go with the flow.
After Mom went to bed each night, Dad would carry the shoes back inside. She wouldn’t remember packing the next morning, but the shoes would be ready for a trip to the car again after sundown.
